Welcome to centre for integrated studies

The Center for Integrated studies was established in 2018.
It was started as part of a program called 'Vision 2020' which was aimed at establishing new centers of studies for starting new academic programmes suited for undergraduate education. In 2018, the 5 Year Integrated M. Sc. programme in Science was started with a view to attract young talented and motivated students to pursue education in science.

Vision

To develop as a School of excellence in interdisciplinary and integrated science education for molding the students with aptitude for research and sustainable development

Mission

To develop as a School most sought after by the students by achieving excellence in science education and research, with foundation in ethics, critical thinking and environmental sensitivity.
Presently the Center for Integrated Studies (CIS) offers:
1. 5 Year Integrated M. Sc. (Biological Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics)
2. 2 Year M. Sc. Forensic Science
1. Integrated M. Sc. Programme
In the process of the fulfilment of the set objects of the Cochin University of Science and Technology, a Centre for Integrated Studies (CIS) was established in the year 2018 to offer 5 year Integrated Master’s Degree programme in Science subjects for imparting specialized education to the students on the completion of their +2 level of education. The five year Integrated M.Sc. (I.M.Sc.) programme of the Cochin University of Science and Technology are non-professional courses. They are not merely integrated programs that combine pre-graduate and post-graduate studies, but are also trans-disciplinary, cutting across several disciplines. The curriculum is common to all the disciplines for the first four semesters. Students with biology background at the +2 stage and who had left mathematics after the 10th class are expected to put in the required efforts to learn mathematics. Similarly, students who left biology at the +2 stage are expected to learn biology. Students of Science subjects require significant amount of Mathematics and Computation throughout the 5-Year programme. The University offers bridge courses in the first semester to facilitate this process. The students spend first two years of their programs at the CIS. The students are transferred to their parent Schools at the end of the fourth semester.

Admission

The Admission is based on the Common Admission Test conducted by the Cochin University of Science and Technology. The present intake for the Integrated M. Sc. Program in Science is 75 (15 x 5). At the end of 2nd year, the students will move to their respective Departments based on the choice of their subject of preference. 15 +/- 3 Number of students will move to each Department. The allotment will be based on the SGPA obtained during the 4 Semesters. At the end of the 3rd Year, the students will be integrated with the M. Sc. courses conducted by the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics. Students who opt for Biological Science stream will be attached to the Department of Biotechnology. After the 3rd Year (6 Semesters), desirous students will have an option to exit the programme with a Bachelors Degree. Participating Departments The faculty members of the participating Departments are engaging the classes during the 10 Semesters. The CIS does not have any dedicated faculty for the Integrated M. Sc. programme. The Participating Departments are:
Department of Applied Chemistry
Department of Biotechnology
Department of Computer Science
School of Environmental Studies
Department of English and Foreign Languages
Department of Hindi
Department of Mathematics
Department of Physics
Department of Statistics

2. Two Year M. Sc. Forensic Science
In 2020, Two Year M. Sc. Forensic Science Programme was started under CIS, with the active participation from the Kerala State Police Academy, Thrissur, based on a specific MOU and Forensic Science Laboratories in the State. The Course is conducted with the support from the faculty members attached with the Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Computer Applications and the School of Legal Studies. The Forensic Science Course All advanced countries have modernised their science of criminal investigation utilizing the new methodologies of forensic science. In this respect, Forensic anthropology, Forensic archaeology, Forensic serology, Forensic psychology, Forensic linguistics, Forensic anthropology, Forensic computing or Digital forensics have gained much importance. The forensic scientists work in close quarter with the police to provide information in solving a case. White collar crimes are also being solved by forensic scientists. For students of younger generation with adventurous spirits, forensic sciences are producing opportunities galore. The main employment generating areas of students of forensic sciences are the police force, law enforcing agencies, legal systems and both government and private investigative offices. Specialization in various branches of forensic sciences like forensic anthropology, forensic archaeology, forensic serology, provides a candidate with a job in their fields of specialization. The Course involves Bio-forensics, Chemo-forensics, Cyber-forensics and Legal-forensics, in addition to Forensic anthropology, Forensic archaeology, Forensic serology, Forensic psychology, Forensic linguistics and Forensic anthropology. The students are provided with specialised training at the Kerala Police Academy, Thrissur, Forensic Science Laboratories in the Districts, Police Districts Head Quarters and the Chemical Examiners Laboratory. Admission The admission is based on the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by CUSAT. The present intake is 15+ 5 (Sponsored by the Kerala Police)
